Seriously, all you need is a volume control right at the power amp, or if it has a gain control then use that. I use a computer for a source in the study and just turn up the computer volume all the way and set the amplifier volume so that that's a little louder than I normally listen. Then if the software goes awry it doesn't take my speakers or ears with it.

The SW volume controls don't seem too bad if you just use them a little bit.
