If you look at his model of a solid-state feedback amp, it has zero distortion below clipping.
"The solid state amp [model] doesn't produce any distortion until the amp clips, but then the levels of the audible distortion products rise very quickly, and the 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonics are audible...".
So his test is just audibility of distortion under clipping conditions.
