I'd wager a little that it won't sound as good. Perhaps it's a semantics issue. Rather than 'for' if they had said 'favoring' that probably would have been better. But 'for' and 'favoring' are largely interchangeable in the vernacular.
I reckon that the larger wire favors bass because it maintains a high damping factor and that the thinner wire favors the treble because it is less affected by skin effect. However the details of the cable construction and insulation may alter the result substantially. (There's them weasel words.)
So much for thinking...
