A few years back I got my hands on a Van Evers Power cord. An audio critic came into my lab to demonstrate the power cord which had a bulky "slider" on the outside of the of the cord between to the two terminations. I put this cord on the pre amp and put the slider in two positions, one near the termination and then in the middle.
When the "slider" was in the middle I heard GROSS distortion when a relatively high amplitude bass note came through.
The critic left me the power cord for a couple of weeks so I brough it into work and put it on an old HP LCR analyzer and found nothing appreciably different when measuring reactance. The analyzer did have the capability of measuring the phase of the current.
When the "slider" was placed near the termination the phase of the current at 100 Hz measured -7 degrees. When the slider was placed in the middle of the line cord the phase of the current measured -25 degrees.
We can determine from the above measurements the the "slider" caused a varying amount of magnetic field depending on it's position.
As we both know, high magnetic field is the last thing we want from a power cord, and having the current shift -25 degrees is the last thing a linear power supply wants to see. I did speak to the so called designer of the power cord who did not wish to discuss my findings.
So in conclusion I think it's fair to state that some "audiophile" power cords are deliberately designed so that the effects they produce are audible.
Having been through a few demonstrations, I have yet to hear anything that i would consider positive from an "audiophile" power cord.
