"...I was searching for answers to why things sounded different"
And I hope you are still searching! Surely it would be a bitter day if your spirit of inquiry is damped for good. I came here for the same reasons but probably with a little different cant. I find it both an intellectual interest and pragmatic frustration that home audio is such a pig in the poke. Tony nailed the overt cause: they sound different because they are different. It's a tautology.
I'm interested in the details, just what are the factors that cause the differences. And I think we already know. I bet any regular reader of AA or practitioner in the field can make a list of the usual suspects and that most of them are guilty. The suspects that is, not the reader. So what is left is understanding the nature and limits of them, which would of course ultimately lead to better control and more uniform performance.
It's not satisfying to me that someone adds a power conditioner or changes the screw in their wall outlet and finds a significant delta in their enjoyment. That shouldn't be happening and to me means that the system is out of control. It's one thing to have to contend with nature's chaotic systems but this isn't one of them. Here we have a system that is totally man-created from beginning to end yet we can't seem to wrest adequate control of it. More precisely, it's not controlled to the extent that some of us (audiophiles and probably some producers and artists) would like it to be.
So here we are on PHP, and AA in general, trying to do our bit to understand, control and improve the limited amount of the system within our reach. I think it a noble and interesting pursuit.
