Things sound different because they are different and because the listener has changed either physically or mentally. Much of the seemingly spurious debate here is between those who place different emphasis and interpretation on these two causes. Sound is the most subtle of the five sensory media, making it difficult to untangle these causes. I suspect it is this very subtlety that makes music an effective means for changing one's emotional state.
