Both "ridicule" and my subject are examples of the number one logical fallacy: the abusive ad hominem. It's right there on the top of the list that was linked to.

It is the logical argument Godwin; he who resorts to personal attacks or ridicule automatically loses the argument.

It is actually really quite sad to see people use ad hominems and think it effective argument strategy. I suppose it is the failing of all of us to have accepted it to any degree.
