One word: semantics
"I heard a difference - therefore this cable *must be* / *is* doing something different than that cable". (Starts wars)
"I heard a difference, and whether it was only perceived or actually caused by the cable, I prefer cable B". (Can't argue with that).
Now, the second statement sounds like a cop-out, but really, it *IS* the most definitive a statement really CAN be *if* the subjectivist is willing to admit the POSSIBILITY of psychoacoustic effects such as expectation bias or peer influence.
Objectivists *do* have a right to say "You said is/must/does so now you must prove it".
In most other hobbies or interests, demanding definitive proof for such a definitive statement is not unreasonable. Then again, attacking someone for proof of what they perceive is just downright ludicrous!!
I perceive I like silver better than copper. Seriously. I do.
I perceive there my M-Audio Revo is my lowest jitter PC SPDIF source based soley on listening impressions from 'specific tracks'.
I perceive Focal poly-kevlar midranges are faster and do rising edge transients better than, say, doped paper or polypropylene.
Perception is wonderful. It can be real or imagined, but it really does not matter because it is what I am EXPERIENCING.
The trouble only starts when a subjective experience is offered as definitive proof that one thing works better than another. Especially when ULTIMATELY the end result is PLEASURE, and pleasure is a very complex thing.
Once you've seen stoned people grooving to someone (also stoned) playing the guitar and singing and wonder what all the fuss is about... and then realized it's their common altered state that is allowing them to connect emotionally in that way...
Well, the trouble with the human mind is that it can produce its OWN chemmicals - no drug needs to be injested for chemical and emotional changes to happen that can influence mood, pleasure and perception.
I honestly believe there has been no real great advancements in audio playback systems in 20 years because of a complete obsession with the equipment of audio and a lack of interest in the psychology of the relationship between human beings and music, or art in general.
