It seems to me a dedicated constant current source would be the way to go.
The problem is, with a complementary emitter follower circuit, the emitters of the NPN and PNP output devices are connected together (through very small emitter resistors). I don't know of any way to work a constant current source into that scenario without separating the emitters for DC and AC coupling to the speaker from each emitter.
In practice, it works better than my pessimistic description sounds like it should.
