"Warming up gear" is an overgeneralization.

Tubeguy:

Valves have heaters for a reason - they need to be at that temperature to work properly. But they don't need hours of heating to work properly - a few minutes and they're likely up to temperature.

Other electronic parts, like speaker voice coils for example, do NOT perform "better" when they heat up, and not necessarily perform WORSE either. But, because of temperature coefficients of resistance (impedance changes with temperature) the crossover/speaker impedance relationships will ever so slightly change as the speaker coils warm up. If you owned TWO identical sets of speakers, and A/B'd one cold and one that was ran at 75% power for an hour, you might hear the difference between the two. As for hearing that GRADUAL minute change over the course of 1/2 hour or an hour? Sheesh - first of all you WOULD need golden ears, and 2nd of all you'd need to be playing the same song over again for 1/2hour to 1 hour - something I myself don't get a lot of pleasure from.

So, by comparing speaker coils to valves we can see that temperature rise affects different components differently.

"Heating everything up" for better sound is an overgeneralization.

But heat DOES change impedance beacase of the temperature coefficient of resistance. How audible this is in different circumstances is really a different matter. (The first sentence does not really PROVE the second, but it offers something worth investigating). Of course, then we get into measureability versus audibility (endless) debates, but I feel no need to start that here. How someone sets out to "prove" this to themselves is really up to them. Proving it to someone ELSE (especially around here) may be difficult at best to downright impossible.

Cheers,
Presto
