Hi.

Yes, our brain interprets data picked up by our ears, AND other sensory organs, e.g. our eyes. That's why live concerts always beat home HiFi as we hear, watch & get emotional with the performers. This is the total perception our brain interpret - being there.

Normal or "impaired" hearing still need such vital info for the brain though impair hearing defintely need eye seeing to make up for the missing aural data from the ears.

Here's my comment on the 3 "problems in audio" you posted:-

(1) What we measure e.g. THD, phase distortion etc etc, are not correlated to what our brain interprets. These data can serve as a performance comparison of equipment or parts under test, which bear no direct reference to what our brain can interprete.

(2) I disagree we "never" hear exactly the same "twice". In fact, if you ask me, I can definitely hear my music exactly the same all the time.
My pair of rusted ears can detect very miner change in the music.

However, if our brain is put to undertake the task of differentiating on rapid repetition of the same sonic stimulation, i.e. same music programmes, it may fail to tell the difference. This is, IMO, the inherent downside of our brain - unable to differentiate constantly repeating stimulations.

The ancient Oriential medical practice - acupuncture - by stimuling with a fine needle, the nerve end on the skin controlling certain part of the body, it can stop temporarily the brain sensation on that part of the body.

This is how, IMO, DBTs if carried out certain ways can null the brian differentiation ability of the audtioners. Hence null conclusion.

However, on sight tests, like now I lately audition the new 3-wire power cord (after one month 24/7 non-stop breaking-in) vs the one I am using. Both I built the same way, same materials (4N purity silver from Germany), only different in size of conductors (#12/#c vs #16/3C). I can hear slight difference, SAME every time - the new cord (thicker gauge size) gives me more defined details in the imaging & soundstaging, & more hidden energy even at very low acoustical level (e.g. 60-65dB 140" on axis from my sweet spot, A weighting, fast response & peak level reading). Very silky & smooth & fine details.

(3) Both work together. Only very fine equipment can deliver very fine musical details & emotion for our brain to interprete. Our brain can be very effective to detect the most minute details.
