Of course it will be best when only amplifier distortion is measureable at the resister. But when it's worse than the distortion of the amplifier alone, then the distortion of the cable is being measured along with the amplifier distortion.
My read on his comment is that he measures at each end of the cable and considers the difference as the cable contribution.
