"Andy C chose to discuss the technical aspect of why your argument was invalid, but that had no effect upon your belief (as I knew it would)"

AndyC did nothing to address the facts of the paper which clearly showed that the audible overload margin was different for different devices. The paper was in response to the Observed fact that recordings had variable quality and that quality could be traced to the kind of gear used in the studio. If that isn't food for thought then i am not sure what is.

AndyC rightly pointed out that preamplifiers and sources in audio systems are rarely, if ever clipped, but so what? The paper was about microphone preamps, which apparently are regularly overdriven during the recording process. I expanded this to address power amplifiers, the only part of a home audio system that could be considered to regularly clip, but he didn't want to touch that issue apparently. Maybe you are game, eh? If we take the SUBJECTIVE clipping headroom difference between tubes and transistors found in this paper of 10db then it has some serious consequences regarding power differences and audible clipping.

"for what is clearly a disorder unrelated to sound waves."

So certain are you young Jedi. Who has the mental disorder here? I would posit that you are the one with the axe to grind here not me. Just because you are hearing disabled is not a reason to come on this forum and bitterly complain that no one can hear what you can't.

"What is it that you think I am doing when I address your "hearing" of op-amps after reading a 70's article"

I was hearing the negative effects of opamps long before I read this article. In fact for a long time my system has had no opamps whatsoever. Not in the phonostage, not in the preamp, not in the DAC nowhere, it is not a new phenomena and I find it interesting to see some technical discussion regarding why. Maybe you are simply uncomfortable with their findings??? It is clear the harmonic distortions of the devices differ greatly so why is it so hard for you to accept the possibile audible consequences?? Even if the effect is "small" by whatever definition you choose to judge such things, once heard it is very difficult to unhear. Maybe you simply haven't heard the difference and are a naysayer by sheer ignorance? You realize of course that electronics distortions are different from mechnanical distortions, by their energy distribution in various harmonics. Mechanical distortions, at least harmonic ones, are easier for the ear/brain to mask whereas various electronic distortions and noise are not as well masked.
