Hello C-J!
I have to admit when I read this LFO's response to your post I laughed so heard I hurt my back! I couldn't believe these comments were coming from a guy who claims "properly-designed" audio components & wires make so little a difference in a system's sound as to be almost negligible! Yet now here he is asking you: ---What preamp fed the amp? What source fed the preamp? What IC's, wires and cords were used? Strange questions from someone who doesn't believe these items have much affect on the final outcome of an audio system's sound, no? At least this Looney Tune realises speakers have a unique characteristic sound and to his credit has always admitted so, thus when he asked you: ---What loudspeakers were used to create the sound waves that you heard? That wasn't surprising at all.
But he promptly returned back to lunatic fringe mode he provided me with another good laugh when he asked: ---Don't they all contribute to the synergy/sound of the system? I question why would someone who claims "properly-designed" audio components & wires make so little a difference in a system's sound as to be almost negligible ask such a question? Of course the answer is a simple one, it just kills him that someone, anyone would actually prefer tubes over his beloved solid state. So he desperately had to find a reason why this man prefered the tubed component. In this state of desperation he finally hatched a plan, he'll imply the test was invalid or skewed against the solid state component. Of course we all know he'll claim these comments he made were more of his joking & teasing too.
I have to admit C-J when you said: "The auditions are all sighted." you provided him with one more opportunity to provide me with a good hardy laugh! I even had to take an extra 30mg of Oxycodone when I finished laughing. I really I hurt my back that bad! Apparently Mr Measurements & Specs doesn't realize you don't have to match levels provided when you switch from one DUT to the other, you put the volume to minimum and slowly raise it to a point you're comfortable listening to. He was correct about one thing though, (he) would never have guessed that and that was hardly surprising!
