While in France for several weeks, my French host was appalled by my request for some 'name' brand bottles of wine at a restaurant, claiming that the house wine was nearly indistinguishable from the stuff I was considering (he was right).
As for the sugar pill placebos, when I had undergone an appendectomy I did not need any pain killers after the procedure, and never touched the Tylenol 3 provided. Ditto for a fistula I just received: the percodan was p[rovided but it was totally unnecessary and I tossed the pills in the first day.
The fact is that some will succumb to the advertising pressure and promise of the high priced products, and some people do not. That's human nature, and points out the effectiveness of advertising, peer pressure, and an appeal to status.
