There's this engineering thing about a black box with inputs. You can design the black box but unless you can define the inputs you'll never be able to adequetely quantify it's performance.
We have modulations reasonably well specified on each of two channels, however the content of these modulations is not defined.
We can attempt to define the content based on some ideal in order to charactize some specific performance. But in doing so we may be ignoring the real world application of the black box itself.
The usefullness of any result depends on how well it represents the final application. In practical applications the content of the modulations stored on the media varies almost infinitely and in general is far from any ideal.
Given this ill-definition and a wide variety of purpose the issue with audio becomes one of prioritizing results. One can't really learn a set of priorities - it's something every audiophile has to come up with based on his own application.
Unquestionably for some audiophiles price and appearance are the major factors behind the purchase but different factors are more important to others even though price and appearance will still play some role. Beyond that we'll always be able to question the veracity, as well as the importance, of any result no matter how hard we try to mitigate the questions from the outset.
Given such a poorly defined input specification to begin with, the disagreements surrounding the results are completely understandable and should be expected. A hundred years from now, if stereo is still around, we'll be having these same conversations.
