I had a VM 1448 amp with hum problems in my PC system. At least 5 different technicians worked on it, but the hum was only reduced slightly. This was very expensive, but I began to justify it as a test of technicians, not really an amp restoration.

Pat said the grounding scheme was all screwed up. He made some radical changes to the grounding, and it came back with almost undetectable hum and noise compared to before. I'm using fairly efficient speakers in the near field, so the noise was critical. Apparently Bell did a better job of grounding;my 2420 was really quiet in the same system except for mechanical noise from the power transformer as it warmed up.

I wish I could afford to have him fly to Georgia and scrub the last bit of noise out of my main rig.
