"Keeping us blind folded, my brother switched out the Belden wire (are you ready for this) with simple coat hanger wire! Unknown to me and our 12 audiophile buddies, prior to the ABX blind test, he took apart four coat hangers, reconnected them and twisted them into a pair of speaker cables."
"Needless to say, after the blind folds came off and we saw what my brother did, we learned he was right...most of what manufactures have to say about their products is pure hype."
With an ABX box, blindfolds are totally unnecessary. You don't know which one is X anyway, though you can choose between A and B as you wish. So the test still doesn't sound like it used an ABX box.
This brings up another problem: how many of the audiophiles were tested at a time? Probably all of them. This would mean, among other things, that the others could influence the results, and that they could not control the switching (one of them could, of course). Both of these are baaaad!
I don't know who told you that a DBT requires an ABX box. After all, there are other ways of doing it. Keeping the time interval between choices very short does increase the sensitivity of the audition, however, but that can be done other than by using an ABX box.
