I'm like you are SF. I also prefer longer term listening over a period of days or even weeks in order to truly get a handle on a component/wire capability. It's too easy to be fooled otherwise. I remember buying some DIY all silver ICs one time that at first I thought were the cat's meow. But as the days went on I realized I wasn't able to listen longterm without fatigue. So I put re-inserted my original ICs. They certainly didn't have the definition the silver ICs had, but they were alot easier and more enjoyable to listen to.
These days I use a gold/silver/copper alloy IC from Z-Squared Audio called the Au/Au. They orginally were "supposed" to retail for $1795pr, but often sold on Audiogon for $200-$300pr in their auctions. Z-Squared, much to their credit, decided to list them for $300pr ---not $1795 and then sell them for $300! I know that still isn't cheap, but I believe they're worth every penny of that $300 and they compare very favorably with many other manufacturer's $1000 and up ICs!
Also like you I'm not constantly auditioning cables either. The only time I audition anything is when I'm considering upgrading that specific component. Fact is I haven't changed anything in my main system for almost 5 years now. That;s how happy I am with what I'm hearing.
Finally I'd like to say it's quite refreshing and a pleasure talking with a more objectivist oriented individual like yourself who's open-minded and rational. It's nice to know not all objectivists are lunatics.
