Hi Tom,
I did some googling of this, by using its advanced search facility to find all pages from bostonaudiosociety.org containing "ABX". I went through all hits, reading each linked page.
I did find an article in which they tested the audibility of the ABX box. That was an article by Stanley Lipshitz here. They put the ABX box in the tape monitor loop of a Naim preamp and used the preamp's tape monitor switch to switch the ABX box in and out. The test subject was none other than Ivor Tiefenbrun. He got 12 out of 30 correct. It's an interesting article - well worth reading.
They did find that the mechanical clicking sound of the relays was slightly different between the "A" and "B" paths and could be identified reliably. This points out the need to put it in some kind of sound-absorbing box.
I couldn't find anything to support Clark's claim.
