Hello SF Tech! Your statement of: Also, remember that an ideal ABX box treats both signal paths the same way... So both components (or wires) would be subject to the same "colorations", if you will. is exactly what the problem with an ABX Box is!
Contrary to what the lunatic fringe members of objectivists say, most components & wires do not have dramatic night and day differences. Fact is although the differences are more subtle, they're still quite noticable. Often it's things like better attack and decay on transients. A wider deeper soundstage or being more able to detect & perceive the "air" around the musicians and singers.
These differences are obviously a result of the unique sets of colorations & distortions the different components or wires being tested possess. The problem lies when the ABX superimposes it own unique set colorations & distortions on top of those of the two different DUT! Now instead of these components or wires having their own completely unique colorations & distortions they have the same exact set of colorations & distortions from the ABX box added to theirs and hence they begin to share characteristics they previously didn't!
From talking with you before I know you're an intelligent and open-minded person. So I ask you, is it really any surprise that one is able to detect the subtle differences when listening to these components and wires when only hearing their own with only their unique colorations & distortions without the ABX? Is it also any surprise they aren't later heard when the ABX box is in the circuit and superimposes it own unique set colorations & distortions onto those of these DUT and thereby making their sonic characteristics share traits they previously didn't?
I think a good analogy would be preparing two meals that used the same meat and veggies that were very similar but with subtle differences in the flavor due to different spices being used. One person states they can easily taste & discern between the two dishes. But someone else insists the only reason the person can easily taste & discern between the two dishes is because he sees them. According to this naysayer the person must be blindfolded when tasting the food! But being blindfolded alone is not good enough for this naysayer. Surprise, surprise he insists garlic must be added to both dishes ---like objectivists insist the ABX box which adds the same colorations & distortions to both DUTs must be used. Now when the blindfolded person sits down to taste the same two dishes with the garlic added they can no longer can discern the differences between the two like they could before the garlic was added. Then the naysayer proclaims triumphantly ---as if the test wasn't rigged to cause the taster to fail--- see I told the person couldn't taste the differences between these two dishes blindfolded. He can only taste differences when he sees the food, which means he doesn't really taste any differences at all, but pretends to so people will believe he has super-tasting abilities!
To me it's just simple commonsense to understand why an ABX changes what people heard when it's not used. Still the LFO will find a myriad of reasons to insist why it must still be used.
