I think the objectivists pooh-pooh this because this process slows up the trials and they believe people are more likely to be sensitive to quick changes. The ABX box solves this, even as it potentially adds colorations/distortions to the sound. This outlines one of the major differences between hard-core DBT'ists and the equally hardcore anti-DBT crowd.
I'm not sure why there's even a debate about DBT. Those who swear by them seem to rarely employ them and those who don't believe in them don't use them, either. I've participated in a few and, quite frankly, they confirm the quality of what I heard if nowhere near the quantity. I heard diffs but they weren't as noticeable. Whether that's because my mind exaggerated the diffs or the ABX box was coloring the sound, I can't say. And it doesn't matter anyway. Ultimately, *I* decide if a component change is worth it, not some test whose reliability is suspect.
