Don't have to! Having worked in studios I know what compressors sound like and I know that each and every time the uncompressed signal is very much preferable. It also gets much worse if the compression is applied in the digital domain and the original recordings were presumably made in the '70s from which nearly all the best recordings hail. Its been slowly going downhill ever since.
(This is, of course, a huge generalization!)
