The relationship of measurements to perception is complex and certainly not fully understood. I don't know how anybody could claim otherwise. What I've always believed, and think the challenge proves, is that essentially identical signals sound identical. Is 70dB the magic number? No idea, but something on that order seems reasonable. Now, here's the part that worries me. It's certainly possible to build an amplifier with a 70dB null between input and output, using music and driving a real speaker. As far as I can tell, such amplifiers (like Self's "blameless" designs) are not widely acclaimed as the worlds best sounding amplifiers. Thus, I suggest that inaccurate amplifiers sound best. Now we're talking "voicing" and some amplifier designers opinion of what the thing should sound like. No problem there, it was a free country at one time, but check science and specifications at the door, because they're now useless as an indicator of "amplifier goodness".
