The article at the time was touting Bob's claim that he could make a $700 amp that sounds indistinguishable from a $15,000 audiophile fave..... At the time, it was an era of skyrocketing costs for audio, and Bob thought his design could be tailored to sound like anyone's favorite amplifier. It was great press for Bob as a designer.
But nobody at the time thought it was claim that audiophiles couldn't tell the difference in general, it was just of a pitch for attaining comparable performance at a much lower price.
I once owned a Carver M-400 cube amp. A great novelty item, but I got rid of it thanks to a BRB 200 amp that I thought was a considerable improvement.
