The "audible -70 dB null" was with the amp powered through the variac in the hotel room. They mentioned that without the variac and with the proper 115V line voltage in the reviewer's home, the -70 dB null collapsed to a -35 dB null. It makes sense to me that a -35 dB null would be audible, and that a -70 dB null would be inaudible.
Anyway, scientific validity was not the point. If one is intent on rejecting scientifically invalid information, then most information in Stereophile (except some of the measurements) would end up being thrown away. The point was not to determine in a scientifically valid way the depth of the null required for audibility, but to demonstrate that with a deep enough null, the differences between amps would be inaudible on an informal basis.
