I took a noise profile during a section where I thought it was most-annoying, using Audacity 3.0's noise reduction utility, and then filtered out about 2 dB of the profile from of the signal. I had to be careful not to attenuate too much, to where the musically relevant portion of the track was noticeably altered.
By the way, what you heard is basically what I heard, in this particular case. The music was simply more-engaging. I thought it would be a great demonstration on how digitization affects how we perceive music.
After I heard the modified signal for the first time, it was kind of a mixed emotion..... On one hand, it is really neat to hear the soul of the performance. But on the other, it's a travesty that it's obscured in its original state. And Rush is just one of hundreds of artists that have been victimized by this.
I'm going to LAME the original, just to see how it impacts the music.
