It seems strange, but when I hear active decoding of a FLAC file, it's like my head tenses up..... I also have the problem with APE files, but not quite as bad.... (It's most-pronounced when I listen on headphones, and it's still there to a degree when decoded and stored as .wav.) There's something strange going on, I think it's a form of jitter, but I really cannot put a finger on what's actually happening.
A LAME file, by contrast, is slightly euphonic. No strain. It's almost a "tube like" coloration. A slight loss of "speed" on transients. A slight loss of microdynamics. But not objectionable. I may even try it on my iPod.
My favorite form of "lossless" encoding is OptimFROG, and I'll have to do a comparison with LAME 320.... That one is a tough call. (But ou can't do OptimFROG on an iPod, at least as of now.)
