You seem to be impowering words like "fringe" and "speculation" with the a destructive force. In the end, the fringe ideas that had merit win out and the fringe ideas that did not fade away. In my line of work I have had a number of "fringe ideas" and did a fair amount of "speculating" in an attempt to advance the state of the art. I see no shame in the persuit of novel ideas. I took no offense in collegues expressing their skepticism in my ideas throughout the years. I valued their alternative perspectives and often refined and redirected my ideas based on their input. I have done the same for them when they have presented "fringe ideas" and have speculated" on new ideas and techniques. We call it brain storming. What people think of a "fringe idea" or speculation" does not affect it's real merits. It's a great starting point. Nothing more nothing less.
