>>> "That's how science works. And it works well. Thee are no special rights given to scientists of status and that's the way every scientist worth his or her salt want it to be. "Fringe ideas" are the kernels from whcih advances in science spring. But the fringe ideas have to endure the scientific method to become more than just a fringe idea. In science these ideas are not belittled when they are refered to as "fringe ideas" and "speculation." <<<

I KNOW that that is how science works. I also know that fringe ideas have to endure the scientific method but I disagree with you that such ideas are NOT belittled when they are referred to as 'fringe' and 'speculation'. Those are exactly the expressions used when someone WANTS to belittle such ideas. And the reason why I quoted those 'replies' is because I am of the opinion that they were deliberately used to belittle the investigative work referred to in the posting "Do the nerves run on sound, rather than electricity?" in the General Section !!
Also, in the General Section, under the posting headed "Homeopathic approach to tinnitus treatment." I am of the opinion that the replies from 'mkuller' were deliberately used to belittle any reference to homeopathy !!!

To quote from mkuller 14/06/07
>>> "Homeopathic remedies however, are not considered to have any efficacy whatsoever by medical science since there are no clinical studies showing they work beyond a placebo effect.
And a later quote from mkuller "I was criticizing homeopathic medicine which is laughable." <<<

If those sentences I have quoted were NOT used to belittle the subjects under discussion then why were they used in the first place ?

Quote from Charles Hansen in reply to mkuller.15/06/07
>>> "The entire concept sounded completely ridiculous to me. Then when our first born had teething pain, we tried all kinds of things. The first thing that helped at all was rubbing his gums with cinnamon oil. This worked for a few days until he apparently realized he hated the strong taste. Someone then suggested Hyland's homeopathic teething tablets. What the hell, only a couple of bucks, and his crying was driving me crazy.
And guess what? They worked like a charm. Every time. If he was crying (and not hungry or with a wet diaper), we gave him the tablets and within 15 seconds he would calm down. His teeth came in a bit earlier than average, at about 5 months. He's a bright kid, but he sure didn't know about the "placebo effect" at 5 months! That experience convinced me." <<<

As Charles describes - his son was too young to be influenced by suggestion, the placebo effect, imagination or effective marketing !!!!

I personally have never been interested in or used homeopathic remedies nor do I personally know anyone who has but I have seen quite a number of investigative programmes about vets who successfully use homeopathic remedies on sick animals !!! Also, the animals know nothing of suggestion, the placebo effect or effective marketing !!!!!
However, my own scepticism and incredulity would still never allow me to ridicule, belittle or dismiss outright as "laughable" (as mkuller did) !!! Why should such as Charles Hansen's (and many others) experiences be referred to with the blanket description of "laughable" ?

Regarding tinnitus. During my many conversations with the ENT Chief Technician he told me that he ran a tinnitus 'group' at the hospital - mainly to collect anecdotal evidence but also to use it as a support group. He would ask the group if they had any experiences to impart to the group - such as what made their tinnitus worse or what had 'eased' it but there was usually silence. It was only later, during tea and biscuits, that some people would come up to him and whisper in his ear such as "I find that doing yoga eases my tinnitus" !! They had been reluctant to say this out loud during the group meeting for fear of being ridiculed but were prepared to whisper it later to the Chief Technician. With belittling attitudes such as illustrated in the various General Asylum postings it is really little wonder that progress is not faster than a snail pace !!

In your reply to me 'Analog Scott' you give the impression that such replies as I have quoted,
even though yes, they are part and parcel of everyday scientific investigations, are nevertheless OK and perfectly acceptable and that May Belt should not quote them in a critical manner. Whereas I prefer to hear of people's experiences, of people's investigations, and if I was suffering from tinnitus to hear of other sufferer's observations and experiences AND, particularly as I AM interested in what happens to information as it travels along nerves, other people's investigations and theories.
Obviously, all is not known or there would not be people investigating further !!!!
I say, in my defence, "Why cannot this be accepted, with good grace, and such people not belittled.?"
Regards,
May Belt.
