De Beers is a South African company but were part of the British Commonwealth prior and during WWII. They actually started their diamond campaign by giving the British royalty large pieces of diamond jewelry under the stipulation that they had to wear it in public.
They also bought out the only diamond mine in the US and then donated the land to the state of Arkansas (IIRC) under the stipultation that it never be reopened for commercial purposes.
