Is there such a thing as a benchmark or reference audio system?

If we don't have an agreed upon benchmark how do we "compare"? We can listen all we want but if we don't know what "right" is how do we judge what we hear?

Now some might say "If I like it that is all that matters". On face value that is hard to argue with. But I think back to a time when someone from out of state paid me a visit. Their kid wanted orange juice for breakfast, so I went out back, grabbed a few oranges, and squeezed him a glass. He took one taste and spat it out. It dosen't "taste right" Mommy!! See, he grew up with Tang and thought that was what orange juice was supposed to taste like.

So if all you have heard is Bose how can you listen and pick out "good" speakers?

Now some of us are lucky enough to have a lot of exposure to truly great audio equipment. But I'd wager, even for those that hang out at audio forums, most simply don't have the disposable income to sample a lot of stuff and go to all of the shows. I know I don't.

So the best I can do is to try and improve what I have, little by little. Some changes are clear improvments and a subjective evaluation is more than adequate. Some times it is not so clear and measurments must be brought into play. And some times it requires that friends are pressed into an informal "DBT" of sorts.

I have been fooling around with amps for awhile and I trust my ears to let me know when something is wrong. But I just got started with speakers and quickly came to the conclusion that attempting to make them without any measuring gear is just plain stupid. Perhaps in time I'll be able to listen and say "yup, we get a 3dB boost around 5khz".

P.S. Of course it is silly to say "how do we judge what we hear" but I think you guys get the idea. If circumstances have prevented you from having tried really good food and drink you might actually think spare ribs and Bud in a bottle is eating high on the hog. But no matter how much I like my ribs and beer I know it is not high end dining by any stretch. But you see, I haven't heard Ale and Goto drivers, or Koetsu cartridges, or an Audio Note Gaku-on but I have tasted Kobe beef:)
