I am not advocating the use of any $500 knob, but simply the application of a little science and thought. Like I say an 'o' ring or the late great 3M tube dampeners are quite marvelous in the amount of detail it adds.
As for the diamonds, no big thing. it's continued perception as a great investment is perpetuated by some of the finest advertising I have ever seen (a diamond should be worth three month's salary?!). Too bad De Beers have already convinced at least 50% of the American population.... And BTW, it is interesting that the continued sales and it's fixture in American romantic life is due so much to a clever advertising campaign. Come to think of it, some audio gear is sold the same way.
