But De Beers has an antitrust suit against them still standing in the US. They have deliberately manipulated the pricing for diamonds, industrial as well as jewelry grade. When Russia opened up and flooded the West with 1/2 to 3/4 carat stones, they invented the Tennis bracelet in order to consume many stones quickly. When GE announce the ability to manufacture diamonds industrially, a secret meeting occurred with De Beer officials and production at GE came to a screeching halt.
Military planners and estimators calculated that Nazi Germany had enough industrial diamonds to last about 6 months to a year, and then their precision grinding (ball bearings) would most likely come to a halt. The industrial capability never stopped because De Beers, a British company, supplied diamonds to Switzerland who then sold them to Germany. De Beers refused to stockpile diamonds in the US and diamonds today are still considered a strategic material even today.
Diamonds are much more common than rubies or emeralds, but just look at De Beer's advertising!. They now are advocating taking your diamonds with you when you die, in order to reduce the supply available!
On the other hand dampening of knobs have a noticeable effect on the sonics in my experience. On the blue alps and the black noble pots, the effect is quite audible in clearing up a certain smear. I use the old, now defunct, 3M tube dampeners for this purpose, placing them on the knobs and pressing them back till they just barely touch the faceplate. This 'braces the knob and shaft against a more solid surface and my guess is that it keeps the 'fingers' on the pot from vibrating. My guess is that an appropriate O ring ought to do the same.
