Someone the other day speculated why a lot of so-called "audio science" types almost never recommend recordings or disclose their personal audio components. The person thinks these people have developed such a distrust of their own perception, they fear a slam of a recommendation would only compound the self-doubt over perceptive ability. And hence they'd rather talk in terms of scientific ideals. Which may or may not exist in the real world. And also make a big deal over others' perceptive ability.
He also thinks they never recommend recordings because unlike components, there is no measurable criteria to suggest what is or isn't a good recording. Aside from the fact CDs have less distortion and more measurable dynamic range than LPs.
