i think there's a major disconnect

it seems like the major disconnect is that for some reason, people assembling a system somehow believe that they aren't necessarily taking part in an aesthetic experience.

many people have a very monolithic view of their systems, much in the same way they have a a monolithic view of recorded music-- that is- recordings are 'correct', and your system should make them sound right. and out of that, that all implementations of any particular technology are meant to 'sound best', regardless. and if its cost-no-object, it must be even 'bester'.

the problem with this IS-- every system is an assemblage of parts from various places-- every recording you play on any given system is EXACTLY the same thing- i.e. engineers pick and choose consoles, mic preamps, cabling, spaces, particular instruments, mastering labs, etc.etc.. because they accept this. but hifi people have yet to realize on a grand scale that this IS the same process it takes to make a system sound 'right'. this process is beyond valuation- it's not right or wrong- it just IS.. and it is up to the individual to choose the parts that make it what they want it to be, or at least an approximation of it. that is, until either science shows some 'eq coefficient' tied to wire, perfectly flat impedance and output curves in loudspeakers, or RTA is implanted into the base of every audiophiles brain.

you can have at it from the 'scientific principle' and measure the shit out of everything until you're certain all electrons are marching in a straight line directly down your auditory canal. you can take the angle 'i aim for tubey warmth' and strain all exactitude into a honeylike goo pouring from a golden ladle engraved with the western electric logo, or you could just buy what people tell you. regardless of HOW one comes at it-- it still comes down to the individual to get it right-- and HOW right is completely an aesthetic valuation. correct or not.. no idea.

WHY camps believe themselves correct is beyond me- any blind test only 'proves' you have a preference one way or another-- and with uneducated listeners unacquainted with what is POSSIBLE tonally will almost always change their mind from day to day. thats very advantageous to a leisure industry catering to the flip floppery.. 'cause somebody's always going to have spare cash, and somebody'll always manufacture unobtainium to take your money so they can create more expensive 'proprietary' horsedung out of recycled marketing prospecti and glue.

what i propose IS that the infighting over scientific method deciding aesthetic judgements give it a rest, and that the 'if i hear it, it's there' camp can it too. ultimately-- it's a personal decision. you can throw your money down a hole in the ground searching for the end of either rainbow, but neither is a good pursuit. learning what is possible outside the realm of economics from making sonically derived decisions is far nobler, and far more enlightening. granted-- the best may still be expensive-- but synergy can create a whole lot more interesting solutions.
if one company don't do it for ya sonically.. there's a few that just might. but i aint gonna decide what you like...
