US - How would you explain the differences heard by those

The differences heard? Or the differences *claimed* to be heard? People hear ghosts. I believe those only to be "claims". Do you?

US - who own multiple pairs of speakers and can compare a new speaker to their tried and trusted older pair?

That is only a comparison of manufacturing variance, not break in. To test break in claims, one would have to test the same speaker at different time intervals. Measurements might be handy, though considered useless by the true believer.
