Not DO, But WHY Speakers Require A "Break-In" Period

In all honesty I cannot even this subject is open to debate! I'd want to discuss this here because I know Tom Danley makes speakers and is quite knowledgeable and respected by most of the naysayers here. In addition I believe the reasons why speakers DO require a "break-in" period are both scientifically measureable & verifiable. So it satisfies the scientific orientation of this site.

It's my contention that the differences between speakers that are new out of the box and the exact same speakers that have been used enough to be considered broken in is quite dramatic! In fact I know it is because I've performed this test at least 5X and heard a difference between fully "broken-in" speakers and the new speakers every single time. For the record I've never tried or tested this witha horn design.

The reasons for this change are NOT magical or subjective. The differences are caused by reasons that are scientifically verifiable and measureable. It's a fact that the various materials that make speaker drivers i.e. rubber, paper, etc are often relatively stiff/inflexible when they are newly manufactured.

However once these drivers have been flexed and moved through their normal usage they become more pliable, and they drivers adjust to a state of used flexibility that the new drivers don't have. This is just a normal part of various manufacturing processes, i.e molding/weaving/setting and the time it requires for different drivers to gain this increased flexibility varies greatly depending on the materials being used in the driver.

I suppose there could be an arguement made and to me it seems less intuitive that the conductive material and dielectric of a wire and components in the crossovers within the speakers, also have to break-in. Don't see why not. So that might be yet another factor contributing to the need for speaker break in. Once that's been done these speakers would indeed sound "better" from that point as opposed to a new relatively unused speakers.

All anyone would has to do to verify this would be to go to their local audio dealer and ask them to directly compare a set of their well used demo speakers with a pair of the same speakers taken new out of a box in front of you. I think the sonic differences will surprise even the most jaded objectivist.
