Sam Ash is having a promotion with 12-month no payment, no interest financing, and I am thinking of picking up a DAT deck. They have the Fostex D-5 for $700 and the Tascam DA-20mkII for $850. Now, I know that Oade Bros. sells the Tascam deck for $675, but Sam Ash may match this price. In any event, the two decks look very similar in design. In looking at the transports and front panel, it is evident that one is rebadging the other, at least to some extent. Is one deck noticeably better than the other in terms of reliable operation, ease of use, build quality and sound quality (ability to make faithful recordings)? I bought a Tascam DA-20mkII a little over a year ago, but sold it. Now I wish I hadn't. Anyway, how good is the Fostex deck? Thanks in advance.
