The quintessential example is St.Pauls Cathedral, London, installed circa 1949. Recently upgraded with modern electronics it's still in use today, and still quite close to state of the art. The arrays are too short to operate in the nearfield, but they do give superb distribution and intelligibility in a very harsh acoustical environment.
