there's the theory that the outer foil should be oriented toward the lower impedance side of the circuit. Most high-end caps have some sort of mechanism to indicate which side of the foil is connected to what lead.
Outside of making the caps look good when they're installed - I use Auricaps in some parts of my Mac tube gear - I really haven't worried about it too much. I did pay more attention, though in the preamp and phono preamp sections.
