As Mr. Hughes suggested, your friend must have a classic Neumann or Telefunken-branded microphone.

One of the most respected authorities on such matters is Klaus Heyne, whose microphone lab (forum) can be accessed here:

You can find oodles of information on these old and VALUABLE microphones under discussion throughout this forum. Do a search within it and find out more!

You can also test the durability of the V14 tube by tossing it against a brick wall or bouncing it from about 15 feet up to a concrete surface. If it bounces three feet, it is "good", if it bounces a foot or less, not so.
