In addition....

some of the Sony models - its been toooo long since I worked on one - had the sensors in the tension arms. You'll need to get out your magnifying glass and examine the whole tape path for anything that looks like a place where there's a gap that might indicate that a piece of foil could 'trip' a sensor. Also, make sure that every point where the tape touches along the path is absolutely free of any buildup.

I saw too many of those autoreverse R2Rs and cassette decks not work due to a glob (technical term, that) of oxide buildup on the sensor.

Of course, you can get a copy of the owner's manual and really know for sure.
