Maynard Ferguson Sound Reinforcement

This is the second time I've heard the Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau Band in the past two years, with the same sound engineer, Mike Freeland. Maynard has a reputation for hiring only the best people, and if you've heard the band, you'll have a seriously hard time disagreeing.

Heads up to all you local/regional sound guys: you need to hear this band with this engineer. Listen and learn. (Are you listening, Emerald City and Channel 15?)

Mike can reinforce this 11 piece jazz band for a 1,000 seat venue, and make it sound like a professional non-reinforced band in a 200 seat venue. He has got the balance DOWN. All sound men who think they are sound engineers need to hear this band, and re-evaluate their work.

Trumpets, trombone, saxes, bass guitar, drums, piano,... they were all placed appropriately in the mix, and the solos and vocal commentary blended perfectly. The only minor problem was a little honkiness on the Yamaha grand piano.

Apparently, there really IS such a thing as a sound engineer, and should not be confused with the guy who simply manages to deliver a bass drum "THUD" and a snare drum "CRACK", with all the other instruments somewhere in the background along with 30% distortion on the cymbals.
