I has been done, with variable results. I think the therory is they are pointing in reverse from the mains. I usally listen to the "allowed" bottom from the monitors and make a phase determination "by ear".

Actually, Monitors are pointing all different directions on the stage and phase anomilies from other live sounds are so mixed that just reversing the monitors (Phase) toward better low frequency definition is a matter of taste. Experimentation and personal taste are the key. Do what is easiest to work with in terms of pleasing your artist.
