recording vinyl to sound card line in: where's the bass?

hi. i've been using goldwave to record some vinyl. but, when i use the sound card's line in, i can hardly hear the bass in playback or when recorded. if i use the sound card's mic input, the sound is good, except it doesn't play in stereo (for example, if a guitar part is supposed to come through one speaker, it comes out really quiet). anyone know how to fix either problem without editing each sound file? does any other software bypass these problems? thanks!
