Try 1/8 to 1/4 or XLR patch cables first. If it sounds OK, there you go. Or use a USB sound device with RCA outputs. There's the ADSTech "Instant Music"; it has RCA line-level in and out, Toslink optical S/PDIF in and out, and can be had for around $50 on sale. It's based on the same Burr-Brown (TI) USB sound chip that's found in more expensive sound things, for what that's worth. If you want to get fancier, connect up a DAC via Toslink and drive the powered monitors from that. I'd use a Behringer SRC-2496 (since I have one), and it would give me the reassurance of knowing the laptop was electrically isolated from the monitors.
