Pro audio also works with much smaller profit margins then high end HiFi.
Whenever I looked inside some esoteric piece of HiFi gear I nearly always noticed that I could buy the components for a fraction of the retail price. This has never happened when looking inside pro kit! This goes for all types of gear from pre amps to speakers.
That said I have of course not opened up everything on the market but especially HiFi tube amps seem to be grotesquely overpriced.
(I know of one rep who tried to sell a tube line-level pre amp the pros for £600.
The near universal verdict was that it was too expensive for its limited abilities.
The rep then made a killing selling it to HiFi enthusiasts to near universal applause.
Wouldn't be that impressive but he did charge the audiophile fraternity nearly £1400 a pop!)
