Ok, so it has just been tested with a 400 watt amp - We took the drive unit out of the cabinet along with the input panel.
The blower works fine. The belts appear fine. The cones appear fine. We removed a bunch of leaves from inside the unit.
The thing was producing bass, but it's a farty, distorted sounding bass. Almost like it was a blown voice coil, but I know that's not the case :) It produces the distortion no matter how soft or loud you play the music. It still cranks!
There seems to be a vibrating (metal?) sound inside of the motor when you listen near it. It's a dull sound - I don't know if it's normal or not? Would something loose or malfunctioning in the motor translate into a distorted sound through the speakers? Is there a short somewhere? Bad connection of a wire?
On another note, it looks like someone has tried to open this stuff up before. I see a bunch of repaired parts inside the unit.
Thanks again for your help!
