All of the above. There are some internal sound cards with excellent specs (M Audio, maybe even Creative Audigy etc). But, if you have any inclination towards home theater/DVD/HD you need or have a receiver with digital inputs, so S/PDIF out from the PC is a good idea. Creative Audigy II are capable of bit-accurate input and output. An external DAC may be the right choice if you have a minimal/vintage stereo preamp/receiver. Some people are pleased with the semi-pro Behringer SRC-2496, which is a DAC/ADC and sample-rate/format/converter that sells for a little over $100. I use one as the ADC for digitizing analog stuff like cassettes and vinyl; if you have an analog library this could be a consideration. I like the fact that the ADC can be optically isolated from the PC over S/PDIF.
